Struthers, Poland girls, boys meet Friday

POLAND

This week’s freezing weather has resulted in a girls-boys basketball doubleheader between rivals Struthers and Poland.

The girls teams were supposed to meet Monday but the game was postponed and will be played on Friday night, the same night the Struthers and Poland boys play on the Bulldogs’ floor.

The night will be a tripleheader with the boys junior varsity teams meeting at 4:30 p.m. followed by the girls varsity at 6 and the boys varsity game at 7:30. One ticket allows a spectator to see all three games. Adult tickets are $6 and student tickets are $4.

Snowmobiles, ATVs to race at Speedway

HARTFORD

Sharon Speedway will play host on Jan. 25 to the Circle Track Showdown featuring snowmobile, ATV, and side-by-side racing competition. The event will again be presented by JohnnyK’s Powersports of Niles.

The following snowmobile classes will be in action in both independent front suspension and leaf: 400cc and under, 401-500 cc, 501-600cc, 601-700cc, 701-800cc, 801cc+ & mods, along with vintage sleds. This year’s event has been expanded to include ATVs and side-by-sides.

Helmets are required, while suits, gloves, chest protectors & tethers are highly recommended. Sled and/or rider must be visibly numbered. Each class will run heats and a feature. Drivers will be permitted a few warm-up laps.

Registration is $20 per class through Jan. 18 and $30 beginning Jan. 19. Registration forms are available at www.sharonspeedway.com/drivers/registration.

Admission is just $5 for an all-access facility pass, which includes both grandstands and pits! Gates will open at 9 a.m. with racing at 11.

AP source: Petrino seeks Louisville job

LOUISVILLE, KY.

A person familiar with the situation says Western Kentucky coach Bobby Petrino has interviewed with Louisville for its opening. The person says the former Arkansas coach met Tuesday with Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich, who is seeking a replacement for Charlie Strong after he took the Texas job over the weekend. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the school has not announced candidates for the position.

Grizzlies, Thunder, Celtics pull off trade

MEMPHIS, Tenn.

The Memphis Grizzlies have acquired guard Courtney Lee and have sent guard Jerryd Bayless to the Boston Celtics as part of a three-team trade that also includes the Oklahoma City Thunder. Under terms of the deal announced Tuesday, the Grizzlies get Lee and a 2016 second-round draft pick from Boston. The Celtics get Bayless and also receive forward Ryan Gomes from Oklahoma City. The Grizzlies sent a 2014 second-round pick they’d acquired from Philadelphia in August and a 2017 second-round pick to the Thunder.

UTEP: 3 hoops players involved in betting

EL PASO, Texas

Three players for UTEP’s men’s basketball team bet on at least one sporting event, a university official said Tuesday, and they are no longer enrolled at the school. It doesn’t appear that the players bet on UTEP games or participated in point-shaving to influence the outcome for bettors, said Richard Adauto, the university’s executive vice president. He said officials did not suspect anyone else on the team of gambling.

The three players are McKenzie Moore, Justin Crosgile and Jalen Ragland.

Kerrigan to be NBC analyst for Olympics

NEW YORK

Nancy Kerrigan will work for NBC during the Sochi Olympics. The network said Tuesday that the two-time figure skating medalist will contribute to figure skating coverage as an analyst. She will also make appearances on the “Today” show and “Access Hollywood.” She will not be doing color commentary on the competitions.
