The first witness will testify this morning in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court in the trial of Taylor Ervin-Williams, 20, of Belmont Street Northwest, charged with burglary, robbery and kidnapping.
If convicted, he could get more than 40 years in prison.
Police said Ervin-Williams abducted two women, age 44 and 19, at gunpoint from a house on Charles Street Southeast on Feb. 22 and demanded that they go to an ATM to get him money.
Ervin-Williams drove the two women to an ATM in Warren, where they gave him money, and he then fled from the car, police said.
Jurors heard opening statements Monday in the courtroom of Judge Ronald Rice after they were driven to some of the locations involved in the case.
Meeting canceled

Today’s organizational meeting of the Youngstown Board of Education has been canceled. The swearing-in of the new board members will be at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Irene L. Ward Building, 20 W. Wood St. The organizational meeting is rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday.

As a result of extensive damage caused by a fire that erupted at Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church, 1812 Oak Hill Ave., on Dec. 28, 2013, the community meal scheduled for Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. will be postponed until further notice to make necessary building repairs.
Woman charged with stealing from mail

Police have charged a former Westminster College mailroom supervisor with stealing items from the mail.
Debra Sue White, 59, of South Main Street in Hubbard was charged with theft and receiving stolen property by New Wilmington police Dec. 31.
Police said White took 55 pieces of mail between March 1, 2010, and May 16, 2011. She stole mail with the intent of taking items of value such as cash, gift cards and lottery tickets, police said.
An investigation began in 2010 when other college staff members found a bundle of mail under White’s desk, police said.
The college fired White on May 16, 2011.
Dog license deadline

The deadline for dog owners in Columbiana County to purchase dog licenses is Jan. 31.
All dogs age 3 months or older must be licensed annually. Licenses cost $10 per dog, and kennel licenses are $50.
Kennel licenses can be purchased only at the Dog Warden’s Office, 8455 County Home Road, Lisbon.
Individual dog licenses can be purchased at the auditor’s office, 105 S. Market St.. Additional locations include Ace Hardware, Columbiana and Middleton; Fuller’s Hardware, East Palestine; and Yard Bank, Salem.
Those who fail to meet the registration deadline will be subject to a penalty that is equal to the cost of the dog or kennel license.
After Jan. 31, licenses will be available for purchase only at the auditor’s office.
Lordstown collects 81.4 pounds of drugs
LORDSTOWN
The Lordstown Police Department collected 81.4 pounds of unwanted pharmaceuticals in the prescription drug drop box in the lobby of the Lordstown Police Department during the box’s first three months of operation, starting Oct. 1. The department received the box from the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators.
The police department installed the box to “limit the misuse of drugs by children and teens who often get the drugs right from their family’s medicine cabinets,” said Lordstown Police Chief Brent Milhoan.
The box is accessible to the public 24 hours per day, seven days a week at 1583 Salt Springs Road. Medications accepted include pills, capsules, patches, powders, vitamins, inhalers and pet meds. Keep drugs in original containers or in sealed plastic bags.
Medications not accepted: liquids, needles, syringes, lancets, thermometers, IV bags, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, empty containers and illegal drugs.
