Fitch’s Figeueroa gets offer from LSU

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown Fitch senior thrower Gabby Figueroa picked up a scholarship offer from LSU on Monday, adding to an already impressive list of suitors.

Figueroa, a two-time indoor state champion in the weight throw, also has offers from Michigan, Iowa, Texas-San Antonio, Kent State and Ashland. She expects to make her decision this weekend.

Figueroa holds Ohio’s state indoor meet record in the weight throw (56 feet) and was also a state qualifier in both the shot put and discus at last year’s outdoor state meet.

East High’s boys basketball team will face Propel Andrew Street High of Pittsburgh on Feb. 5 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

The Panthers’ game will tip off at 3:15 p.m. that day and the Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers will follow at 7 p.m.

Tickets, which include entry for both games, are $20 (Upper Baseline Curve) and $80 (100 Level Curve). Lower Level tickets must be purchased by Friday.

Indians add free agent outfielder Francoeur

CLEVELAND

Veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Indians. Francoeur, who turns 30 on Wednesday, will report to spring training camp in Arizona. A .263 career hitter, Francoeur played with Kansas City and San Francisco last season, batting a combined .204 with three homers and 17 RBIs in 81 games. Pirates reach deal with OF Dickerson

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Chris Dickerson that includes an invitation to major league spring training. The 31-year-old Dickerson hit .238 with four home runs and 13 RBIs with Baltimore in 2013.

Dickerson is a .262 career hitter with 15 homers and 60 RBIs in 314 games for Cincinnati, Milwaukee, the New York Yankees and the Orioles.

NFL wild-card games deliver big numbers

The NFL’s wild-card weekend drew huge television audiences. The four games averaged 34.7 million viewers, the most-watched wild-card weekend ever.

The San Francisco 49ers’ 23-20 win over the Green Bay Packers had 47.1 million viewers Sunday on Fox to make it the most-watched wild-card game on record. The previous high was 42.4 million for the 2011 Steelers-Broncos game, which Denver won in overtime on Tim Tebow’s touchdown pass.

The two Saturday games averaged 30.8 million viewers on NBC, a record for the Saturday wild-card games. The New Orleans Saints’ 26-24 win over the Eagles was the most-watched Saturday wild-card game ever with 34.4 million viewers.

Grinnell player sets NCAA assists record

GRINNELL, Iowa

The small Iowa school that produced 138-point scorer Jack Taylor has set another NCAA record. Division III Grinnell College player Patrick Maher broke the NCAA record with 37 assists Monday night in a 164-144 victory over College of Faith.

Maher snapped the record of 34 set by Grinnell assistant coach David N. Arseneault in 2007.
