Pa. man’s death ruled accidental

The Mercer County Coroner’s office has ruled the death of Thomas R. Kobielus, 43, of Shenango Township an accident.

Kobielus died of flash-fire burns suffered in an explosion in an unattached garage at his residence, authorities said. The fire occurred about 5:40 p.m. Friday.

The Pennsylvania state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the explosion and fire.

Man faces drug, weapon charges

Police arrested a 26-year-old Youngstown man just after midnight Sunday on charges of drug possession and improperly handling a firearm.

Derrick Stewart also was cited for driving under suspension and driving with no headlights.

Stewart was stopped on McGuffey Road for driving with no headlights on. He told police his license was suspended. When police asked Stewart if he had any weapons on him, he said no, according to the report, but a search resulted in the finding of a small bag of suspected marijuana and a .380-caliber handgun with seven rounds in it.

Stewart’s municipal court date has not been set.

Recycle Xmas trees

Howland

Howland Township will pick up and recycle Christmas trees through Jan. 17. Remove all ornaments and trimmings before placing them curbside.

Township residents can drop off the trees from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Public Works Department, 3600 North River Road.

Ski trip to the Peak

The public is invited to join the Good Times Ski and Snowboard Club on Wednesday as members travel to Peek ’n’ Peak in Findley Lake, N.Y. The bus will depart at 7 a.m. from Lowe’s parking lot, Niles-Cortland Road, Warren, and will return by 9 p.m. after a full day on the slopes.
