NiSource grant will fund district officer

POLAND

NiSource Midstream Services will present a $15,000 grant to Poland Township and School District at the Poland Township Administrative Building on Wednesday.

The grant will help fund a police officer or resource officer in the school district. Trustees and school district representatives will accept the contribution from the NiSource Charitable Foundation.

The administrative building is located at 3339 Dobbins Road.

Fracking opponents organize again

YOUNGSTOWN

Opponents of hydraulic fracturing announced they are going door-to-door to collect signatures to put the “Community Bill of Rights” Charter Amendment on the May primary ballot.

The Community Bill of Rights Committee, which hopes to ban fracking within city limits, launched its new website, Protect-Youngstown.org.

A similar effort is underway in Niles to collect signatures to put a ballot question on the May ballot. The website for that effort is KeepNilesSafe.org.

Historical Society to host fundraiser

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will host its second annual Cookie Table & Cocktails fundraiser Feb. 8 to raise money for new exhibits at the site of the event, the Tyler History Center.

The fundraiser will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. at 325 West Federal St. downtown.

Tickets are $40 and can be reserved by contacting the Historical Society at 330-743-2589.

Apprenticeship applications taken

The Plumbers and Pipe-fitters of Mahoning Valley Joint Apprenticeship Committee will be accepting applications for its apprenticeship program Jan. 15.

It is a five-year program in which people seeking to learn a skilled trade attend two evening classes per week, while working during the day.

Applications will be accepted between noon and 4 p.m. at the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 396 hall at 493 Bev Road, Building 3, in Boardman. There is a $45 application processing fee.

Applications also will be accepted Feb. 11, March 20 and April 16 at the same location.

Williams will speak at chamber event

The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber will host its Economic Forecast Breakfast, featuring keynote speaker Jay Williams, at 8 a.m. Feb. 6 at Mr. Anthony’s on 7440 South Ave.

Williams, who served as the mayor of Youngstown from 2006 to 2011, has been nominated to serve as head of the U.S. Economic Development Agency. He will discuss the economic expectations for the nation. There is a charge.
