MCCTC manufacturing technology program receives new equipment

Students in the Manufacturing Technology and Precision Machining program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center have recently received a new piece of equipment that will help them prepare for the job market.

The Career Center purchased a new Haas Toolroom Vertical Milling Center. The equipment will allow students to learn how to operate a full-automated three-axis milling machine. The machine will also teach students the basics of writing in G-code and M-code, and tool offsetting. The equipment will be incorporated into the junior and senior year coursework for the program and to say the students are excited about the equipment would be an understatement to instructor Mike Lutz.

“Yeah, they’re ready to jump onto it right now,” Lutz said.

The equipment mirrors the type of equipment and programs the students will be working on out the workplace.

“Any manufacturer would have this on their job. By gaining the knowledge in here, our students will have a leg up when they graduate,” Lutz said.

In addition to the milling machine, the school also purchased four simulators that will allow the students to practice the coding and programming necessary to make it function without working on the full machine.

“By purchasing this equipment and investing in our Machining program, this shows the Career Center’s commitment to educating our students on the latest equipment available and the future we see for our graduates in the manufacturing industry,” John Zehentbauer, Career Technical Director, said.
