POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Poland and Boardman townships:

POLAND

Feb. 10

Arrest: Township police arrested 52-year-old Gary M. Sallaz at his South Bailey Road residence in North Jackson on a Struthers Municipal Court warrant charging him with failure to appear in court.

Arrest: Mason C. Hornyak, 27, was taken into custody at his North Lakeview Avenue home. The Youngstown man was wanted on a Struthers Municipal Court warrant charging him with contempt of court.

BOARDMAN

Feb. 21

Theft: Jennifer M. Herman of Old Furnace Road, Youngstown, faced two counts of theft after a total of $393 worth of merchandise was stolen from Kohl’s and Ulta Beauty, both in the Shops at Boardman Park.

Identity fraud: A Sheridan Road man discovered someone tried to use his credit card without permission to make a $1,300 online purchase.

Theft: A township woman reported her purse stolen while at a Doral Drive grocery store.

Identity fraud: A Creston Drive man found out someone had used his Social Security number without authorization to file a 2013 income-tax return.

Drugs: Officers took custody of 32-year-old Leslie A. Albanese of Green Bay Drive, Boardman, who was wanted on a felony charge of deception to obtain a dangerous drug after a Jan. 30 situation in which a Giant Eagle pharmacist called a doctor regarding filling a prescription for Vicodin. Albanese had eight such prescriptions filled in the doctor’s name under false pretenses, a police report said.

Feb. 22

Misuse of a credit card: A Slippery Rock, Pa., woman learned her stolen debit card had been used to make three fraudulent transactions totaling $381, including a purchase at Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Arrest: Police responding to a shoplifting situation at Southern Park Mall took into custody 29-year-old Bianca L. Prince after learning the Garfield Heights woman was wanted on a felony probation-violation charge from Cuyahoga County. Prince was not charged in the theft, however.

Theft: A woman stole two pairs of men’s undergarments from Dollar General, 859 E. Midlothian Blvd.

Theft: An elderly township woman reported her wallet stolen at a Boardman-Poland Road store.

Arrest: Authorities answered a call about someone possibly chasing another person with a knife in the 4000 block of Market Street before arresting 30-year-old Jacob J. Merchant of Oak Lane, Youngstown, near Windsor Drive on charges of making false alarms and obstructing official business. Merchant provided a false name, and a search of his cellphone revealed numerous unfounded 911 calls, a report showed.

Feb. 23

Arrest: A traffic stop near South Cadillac Drive led to the arrest of 51-year-old Michael Lozano of Claybourne Avenue, Boardman, on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired.

Theft: Someone entered a car in the 900 block of Boardman-Poland Road and removed $202.

Criminal damaging: A residence in the 100 block of Lost Creek Drive was shot with paint balls. Damage came to $500.

Theft: Ikeia D. Bankhead-Hasley, 19, of Lee Avenue, Youngstown, faced two theft charges after two pairs of tennis shoes and three pairs of jeans were stolen from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road, on two occasions.

Arrest: Police in the 600 block of Boardman-Canfield Road pulled over and charged 42-year-old Rachel L. Brundage with operating a vehicle impaired. Brundage, of 42nd Street, Canfield, also was cited on a charge of having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Attempted theft: Someone in the 1800 block of Oles Avenue moved and damaged a refrigerator/freezer unit from a carport in an effort to steal the item.

Criminal damaging: A car in the 4900 block of Brookwood Road was found with a smashed front windshield and a missing driver’s-side mirror.

Theft: Two men stole a package of razors from Family Dollar, 4026 South Ave.

Arrest: George Haag of Fairfield Drive, Boardman, was charged with operating a vehicle impaired after authorities pulled over the 34-year-old Haag near Woodfield Court.

Criminal mischief and damage: Someone used paint balls to strike a home in the 8400 block of Crystal Drive. The residence was not damaged, though a wooden table was.

Theft: A Pulaski, Pa., woman reported her cellphone and other items stolen while at a business in the 400 block of Boardman-Poland Road.

Feb. 24

Theft: Police booked a 15-year-old Youngstown boy after $4 worth of socks was stolen from Macy’s in Southern Park Mall.

Drugs: A traffic stop in the 4900 block of Market Street resulted in a citation charging Andrew A. Martinez of Outlook Avenue, Youngstown, with marijuana possession. Martinez, 30, had two large bags of suspected marijuana totaling 114 grams, police said.

Thefts: An official with T.J. Maxx & More, 717 Boardman-Poland Road, reported two men in their 30s stole several purses in a series of thefts that began Jan. 29. The thieves came to the business every Wednesday since that date, a report said.

Fraud: A Glen Park Road man told police he received a call from someone claiming to be his grandson in the Cook County jail in Chicago and that about 10 minutes later, another caller told him he was a lawyer and could reduce the first caller’s bail if the accuser sent money to an unspecified account. In reality, the local man’s grandson was in Clarion, Pa., a report showed.

Theft: A New Waterford man noticed his debit card and various medical cards missing after he left a medical center in the 1200 block of Boardman-Canfield Road.

Criminal mischief: A driver intentionally struck and damaged several garbage cans in the 700 block of Nellbert and Tudor lanes as well as in the 500 block of Lynn Street.

Aggravated menacing: A Golfview Avenue woman alleged her former boyfriend sent her 28 threatening text messages, including a threat to harm the accuser and her family.
