Huge Marilyn Monroe statue to leave Calif. for NJ exhibit

PALM SPRINGS, Calif.

A massive statue of Marilyn Monroe that has turned heads for two years in Palm Springs is headed east.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says the 26-foot-tall, 34,000-pound statue will be transported in April from California to Hamilton, N.J., where it will be part of an exhibit honoring its designer, Seward Johnson.

A going-away party, open to the public, is planned for March 27.

The statue of the “Some Like it Hot” star arrived in the desert resort city in 2012.

The sculpture depicts Monroe trying to push down her billowing skirt in her memorable scene in “The Seven Year Itch.”

The “Forever Marilyn” statue, on loan from The Sculpture Foundation, previously was in Chicago.

Palm Springs officials say they hope eventually to lure Marilyn back.

Accidental invite to 61,000 causes Stockholm chaos

STOCKHOLM

Police say they were called in to restore order in downtown Stockholm after Sweden’s public-employment service accidentally sent an email invitation for a recruitment event to 61,000 jobs-eekers instead of 1,000.

Police spokesman Ulf Lindgren says staff at the job center alerted police Wednesday after several thousand people showed up to an event where job-seekers would have a chance to meet with potential employers.

He said many people were upset, but no arrests were made.

Clas Olsson, acting director general of the employment service, said he deeply regrets the mishap and wishes to send his apologies to all those affected.

Woman gives birth in New York City crosswalk

NEW YORK

A New York City woman and her newborn are doing well after the baby girl made a surprise entrance on a busy street.

The open-air birth happened Monday afternoon on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

According to New York’s Fox 5 News, the woman left her building to go to the hospital, and her doorman tried to hail a taxi for her. But the baby couldn’t wait, and the woman lowered herself onto the ground in the crosswalk.

One witness told the TV station, “She was like, ‘Oh my God, the baby’s coming.’”

Several people stopped to help until police and medics arrived. Women offered scarves to wrap the baby.

An ambulance took the mother and baby to nearby Lenox Hill Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman says they went home Wednesday.
