Children's advocate nominees are sought

The Children’s Advocate Award will be presented by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley in the spring, and nominations are being accepted until Feb. 28.

Awards will be presented at the Champions for our Valley’s Children celebration, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. May 13 at The Lake Club, 1140 Paulin Road.

The award recognizes Mahoning Valley individuals and organizations that exhibit the spirit of caring and are always working to improve the lives of children.

The Champions for our Valley’s Children celebration dinner cost $50 per person for reservations, and corporate sponsorships are available.

Nominees may be self-nominated or nominated by another person. Nominees must reside in the service area of Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley, which comprises Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties in Northeast Ohio, and Mercer and Lawrence counties in Western Pennsylvania.

Following are the selection criteria for the award:

Nominee demonstrates a deep desire to help children.

Nominee has taken action to address a problem facing local children or youths.

Nominee has given three or more years of service that directly improves the well-being of children.

Nominee addresses a broad problem or issue affecting a large number of children or youths.

Nominee demonstrates a long-term commitment to finding solutions to the problem or issue, mostly at the local level.

Nominee gives personal volunteer service over and above the expectations of his or her career or profession.

Nominee promotes the continuation of his or her advocacy or service by enlisting others to help solve the problem and enhance the well-being of children and the community.
