Pa. Gov. Corbett calls out nearly 800 National Guard troops to fight storm
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Tom Corbett says hundreds of National Guard troops have been deployed to local armories in preparation for emergencies resulting from the winter storm.
At a briefing at the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Harrisburg, Corbett said today that nearly 800 National Guard people are standing by at locations across the state.
He says the guard also has made available 14 four-wheel-drive ambulances in case they are needed to help people in hard-to-reach areas.
The governor says the state is still operating under the emergency operation declaration from the last storm.
Corbett says nearly 2,000 Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania Turnpike trucks are trying to keep roads cleared but that the rapid snowfall rates have made that a challenging task.
