Penguins earn baseball preseason acclaim

YOUNGSTOWN

Five Youngstown State baseball players earned preseason recognition last week as College Sports Madness and Perfect Game USA released their Horizon League preseason coverage.

Senior catcher Josh White (Eynon, Pa.) and senior infielder Phil Lipari (Poland) were both tabbed preseason first-team all-conference, and outfielder Nick DiNello (Boardman) was named to the second team by College Sports Madness.

Perfect Game writer Allan Simpson tabbed Youngstown State pitchers Brendon Shoemake (Jr., La Canada, Calif.) and Nic Manuppelli (Sr., Pittsburgh) as the third and fifth Horizon League players who will be drafted in 2014. Simpson predicted that Shoemake will be taken between the 12th and 18th rounds, and he thinks Manuppelli will be selected between rounds 15 and 25.

The Penguins will start the 2014 season in one week with contests Friday against Virginia Tech and Charlotte in Charlotte.

YSU soccer signs nine recruits for 2014 season

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State women’s soccer program has signed nine student-athletes to national letters of intent to join the Penguins for the 2014 season, coach Will Lemke announced.

The class includes three players from Ohio, M/D Alex Kithcart (Hudson), D/M Marissa Martin (Dublin), and F/M Sydney Riddle (Solon), plus M/F Katie Hackos (York, Pa.), M/F Abby Kenski (Erie, Pa.), GK Hope Knussman (Easton, Md.), M Kyler Lum (Pulaski, Pa.), M/D Sophie McFarland (Brownsburg, Ind.), and F/CM Stephanie Reyes (Cordova, Md.).

“We are extremely excited to welcome the 2014 recruiting class because of the quality and depth it will add to our team on both sides of the ball,” Lemke said.

Local House of Speed facility slated to close

YOUNGSTOWN

House of Speed Youngstown will discontinue operation as of March 31, according to an e-mail from franchise owner Steve Halloran.

All athletes that have purchased a training package within the last 12 months will be able to use their sessions and continue training up until March 31.

There also is a possibility that one of the senior trainers at House of Speed Youngstown will continue speed and sports performance training and selectively honor House of Speed training packages, the e-mail stated. For more information, call 330-953-1518.

Area athletes honored for academic success

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

Several area athletes were among 60 at Westminster College recognized for their achievements by being named to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference academic honor roll for fall 2013.

Among area players on the PAC honor roll: Lexi Starheim, senior from Hubbard, volleyball, second team all-PAC; Aaron Sutton, senior from Howland, cross country, honorable mention all-PAC; Selena Dasari, sophomore from Canfield, soccer; David Jamieson, freshman from Brookfield, football; Dan Yargo, freshman from Youngstown Christian, football.

Boston College wins 5th straight Beanpot

BOSTON

Patrick Brown tipped in a shot from the point with 5 1/2 minutes to play for the tiebreaking goal and added another in the final minute, lifting Boston College to its school-record fifth straight Beanpot championship with a 4-1 win over Northeastern on Monday night. Boston College (22-4-3) extended its unbeaten streak to 15 games (14-0-1) on the same day it took over the No. 1 spot in the national rankings.
