Man charged in Walmart robbery
Staff report
BOARDMAN
Police arrested a 26-year-old township man on multiple charges, including robbery, after Walmart security officials accused him of a theft from the store.
Karell McDaniel of Applecrest Court is in Mahoning County jail until his scheduled court appearance at 8:30 a.m. today in Mahoning County Area Court here.
In addition to robbery — a second-degree felony offense — McDaniel is charged with resisting arrest and obstructing official business.
Loss-prevention officers at the Walmart store on Doral Drive called police just after 3 a.m. Sunday after McDaniel reportedly was caught with a pack of cigars worth $14.90.
When police arrived, McDaniel was arguing with employees, according to a police report.
He was ordered to turn around because he was under arrest. McDaniel ran as police tried to arrest him, according to the report.
Police eventually were able to place him in handcuffs after some resistance.
Loss-prevention officers also told police a scuffle occurred when McDaniel was approached about the theft, which was visible on surveillance footage.
Because there was force used on the Walmart employees, McDaniel was charged with robbery, police said.
The employees were not injured in the altercation.
A township officer, however, cut a finger and had a sore wrist, hand and back from detaining McDaniel.
