Chaney STEM students earn performance awards

Students at Chaney High School — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics/Visual and Performing Arts Campus were awarded $200 checks from The Challenge Program Inc. for their performance last year.

The Challenge Program Inc., a regional nonprofit organization designed to provide high-school students with incentives for success, recently kicked off the program with an orientation and awards assembly at the school.

The program partners with businesses to motivate high-school students to excel in and out of the classroom.

Weatherford, one of the largest international oil and natural-gas service companies, is the sponsor of Chaney.

During the assembly, five sophomore and five junior students were awarded checks of $200 for their performance last year in The Challenge Program’s award categories of academic attendance, academic improvement, academic excellence, The STEM Award and community service.

Senior award winners were awarded their checks last spring.

The total amount of awards is $3,000.

The five sophomore award winners are Buker Abu-Hashim, STEM Award; Asia Jones-Williams, Attendance Award; Adiel Martinez, Community Service Award; Phoenix Reed, Academic Improvement Award; and Justyn Williams, Academic Excellence Award. The five junior award winners are Rana Abu-Hashim, STEM Award; Shimesh Davis, Academic Improvement; James Gordon, Academic Attendance; Erica Pryor, Community Service Award; and Janay Robinson, Academic Excellence Award.
