ARLINGTON, TEXAS

Ursuline High senior Chris Durkin ran for one touchdown and passed for another as the US National team defeated Canada, 43-7, on Saturday. Durkin’s 7-yard scoring run gave USA a 10-0 lead. The Virginia Tech recruit also hit Avery Edwards for a 9-yard score. Durkin completed five passes for 51 yards and ran seven times for 50 yards.

Phantoms skate with fans at Lily Pond

YOUNGSTOWN

Members of the Youngstown Phantoms hockey team will be at the Lily Pond in Mill Creek Park from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday to skate and greet fans. Hockey lovers can meet the players and try out their skills on the ice.

Mill Creek MetroParks has allowed outdoor skating this winter at the Lily Pond for the first time since 1990. Supervised ice skating at the Lily Pond will continue on Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as long as weather conditions will allow, or until Feb. 23. Schmidt scheduled as Curbstone lunch guest

Rob Schmidt, Youngstown State assistant athletic director and radio voice of the YSU men’s basketball team, will be the guest speaker Monday at the weekly luncheon of the Curbstone Coaches. The event begins at noon at Luciano’s Banquet Center on Raccoon Road. The public is welcome.

Penguin swimmers fall at Bowling Green

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team closed out the dual portion of its schedule with a 179-110 loss at Bowling Green on Saturday.

Ashley Dow (Sr., Houston) won the 100 backstroke in a time of 57.51 seconds and was second in the 200 back with a time of 2:05.82. Megan Siford (Fr., Oregon, Ohio) won the 1-meter dive with a score of 244.80 and Lydia Scheringer (Fr., Munich, Germany) won the 3-meter dive with a score of 243.30. Bailey Dipman (Fr., Genoa, Ohio) finished second in both diving events.

Cashner wins, Pestano loses in arbitration

San Diego’s Andrew Cashner won and Cleveland’s Vinnie Pestano lost as pitchers split decisions Saturday in baseball’s first salary arbitration cases in two years. Cashner will make $2.4 million rather than the club’s offer of $2,275,000. Pestano will make $975,000 instead of his request for $1.45 million.

Walker stays hot at cold Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.

Jimmy Walker had a hot hand in the cold wind Saturday and built a six-shot lead in the PGA Tour AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Walker made his first bogey of the tournament, and that hardly slowed him. He countered with five birdies in 30 mph gusts at Monterey Peninsula for a 4-under 67, leaving him on the verge of his third victory this season. He was at 13-under 202. Tim Wilkinson of New Zealand had a 69 and Hunter Mahan had a 72. They were at 208.

Allen bounces back for 1-stroke lead in Allianz

BOCA RATON, Fla.

Michael Allen birdied four of his last eight holes for a 3-under 69 and a one-stroke lead over Scott Dunlap and Chien Soon Lu in the Champions Tour Allianz Championship. A day after becoming the ninth player to shoot a 60 on the Champions Tour, Allen fell out of the lead after playing his first 11 holes in 1 over. He birdied the next two holes to move into a share of the lead and birdied the last two to finish two rounds at 15-under 129.

Also, Cheyenne Woods, Tiger Woods’ niece, shot a 2-under 71 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Australian Ladies Masters at Gold Coast, Australia, and South Africa’s Thomas Aiken and Justin Walters shared the third-round lead in the Joburg Open at 15 under at Johannesburg.
