Choffin Career and Technical Center will host its third annual Black History Month celebration from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Feb. 19.
This year’s theme is “African American Music, Dance and Art Appreciation,” and it will be explored with a workshop titled “Music Meets Technology” with Jerald Daemyon, an African-American master violinist, lecturer, educator, composer, producer and recording artist. Daemyon will present to the entire student body in the commons of Choffin, 200 E. Wood St.
The “Music Meets Technology” workshop aims to teach students and emerging artists to understand how technology can help transform musical talents into a sustainable career. The workshop includes overviews of performance, improvisation, composition and a look into the music business.
Daemyon began studying the violin in the fourth grade in the Detroit Public Schools, and continued his training at Cass Technical High School, University of Michigan, and Marygrove College. He has performed with mainstream pop and rhythm and blues artists, as well as well-known jazz vocalists. He often performs with The United States Air Force Symphony Orchestra and other symphony orchestras across the country. He is a member of the National Academy of Recording Artists and Sciences, and is a winner of the 3M Award of Artistic Innovation, Billboard’s Best Contemporary Jazz Album and other honors.
