Crash victim dies

HANOVERTON

A 48-year-old Lisbon man involved in a Jan. 22 car crash has died.

The Summit County Coroner’s Office said Joseph A. Hicks died at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday as a result of injuries he suffered in the accident on U.S. Route 30 in Hanover Township, the Ohio State Highway Patrol stated in a fax sent Friday.

Hicks, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was driving his 2000 Chrysler 300 west when he crossed the center line and hit an eastbound 2013 Freightliner commercial tractor-trailer driven by a 34-year-old El Paso, Texas, man at 6:57 p.m. Jan. 22, according to the patrol.

Guilty of assault

A jury in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on Friday found 30-year-old Tamika Jones guilty of a count of misdemeanor assault for the stabbing of a woman during a brawl in a Hilton Avenue yard after a homicide in June of 2012.

Jurors found Jones not guilty of the more-serious charge of felonious assault. Jones faced two charges of felonious assault for the attack on Victoria Truman and the maximum sentence for felonious assault.

The maximum sentence for the assault charge is six months. A sentencing date has not been set yet. Jurors began hearing the case before Judge Maureen Sweeney on Tuesday and began deliberating Thursday.

Teacher is thrown

A 14-year-old East High School student was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center about 9 a.m. Thursday after police said he threw to the ground a teacher who was trying to break up a fight.

Reports said the teacher was trying to stop two students from fighting when the male student came up behind her, grabbed her and threw her to the ground. The 57-year-old teacher injured her back, reports said.

The Trumbull County Republican Party will have its monthly breakfast at 9:30 a.m. today at Perkins Restaurant, 1953 Niles-Cortland Road, across from the entrance to Eastwood Mall. Guest speaker will be Geoffrey Weaver, candidate for the 11th District Court of Appeals. The public is invited to attend.

Police arrest man

Police arrested a man on a charge of domestic violence Thursday after his girlfriend said he punched her in a Glenwood Avenue store and threatened to kill her.

Keith Johnson Jr., 24, was arrested at a home in the 500 block of West Ravenwood Avenue about 12:30 p.m. His girlfriend told police he had become violent and he hit her and knocked her down as they were walking into the store.

The girlfriend fled to a church on Parkcliff Avenue, where police were called. They arrested Johnson at the home without incident, reports said, and he was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Power cut at mall

Ohio Edison Co. workers had to temporarily cut power to Southern Park Mall late Friday morning to make repairs, said Michele Meregaglia, the mall’s manager.

An exposed ground line in the area prompted the electric company to turn off the power about 11:40 a.m., Meregaglia said. He said about 75 percent of the mall’s power lines were affected. Power was restored about 11:55 a.m.
