Penguins play host to National Invitational

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s track and field teams play host today and Saturday at the WATTS facility to the Youngstown State National Invitational. Events begin at 3:45 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Saturday.

Teams competing in the event include Duquesne, Bucknell, Detroit, Oakland, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Slippery Rock, Clarion, Seton Hill and Shippensburg.

Today’s schedule features the women’s pole vault, men’s and women’s long jump, men’s and women’s weight throw, men’s and women’s 5,000-meter run, men’s and women’s 500-meter dash, men’s and women’s 1,000-meter run and will conclude with the men’s and women’s distance medley relay.

On Saturday, field events starting at 10 a.m. are men’s and women’s triple jump, men’s and women’s shot put, and men’s and women’s high jump. The men’s pole vault is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. Running events, starting at noon on Saturday are the mile, 400-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, 60-meter dash, 800-meter run, 200-meter dash, 3,000-meter run and 4x400-meter relay.

Admission is $7 and parking is available at the R-1 Lot located on Elm Street just north of the WATTS.

12 MMA amateur bouts scheduled Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN

Twelve amateur MMA fights are scheduled Saturday night for St. Mary’s Fight Night 2.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the fights scheduled to start at 7:30 at St. Mary’s Assumption Center, 356 S Belle Vista.

The cost is $30 at the door.

OHSAA track and field meeting is Tuesday

The mandatory OHSAA track and field state rules meeting has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Austintown Fitch High auditorium.

The Seattle Mariners reached agreement Thursday on a $14 million, two-year deal with reliever Fernando Rodney, according to a person familiar with the deal. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement was subject to a physical. The deal, first reported by ESPN, also includes performance bonuses.

Schilling announces he is battling cancer

HARTFORD, Conn.

Former pitcher Curt Schilling announced Wednesday that he is battling cancer. The 47-year-old Schilling divulged the news in a statement released through his employer, Bristol-based ESPN. It did not indicate what type of cancer Schilling has, when he was diagnosed or what his prognosis might be.
