Man faces charge of assaulting officer

YOUNGSTOWN

A man is in the Mahoning County jail after reports said he spit on a police officer in the emergency room at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Police were first called to Turning Point Counseling Center for a report of a possible deceased person and found Orin Canty, 43, very drunk, reports state. He was taken to Northside, and a police officer followed because Canty was becoming combative.

At the hospital, Canty became more combative when he tried to smoke inside and would not allow a doctor to examine him. A police officer came over to help, and Canty spit in his face, reports said.

Medical personnel put a shield on Canty’s face so he could be treated, and hospital personnel helped the officer clean himself off, reports said. Canty faces charges of assault on a police officer and disorderly conduct.

Workers report manhole-cover blast

WARREN

A worker in front of First Place Bank got a scare Thursday afternoon when a manhole cover on the north side of East Market Street blew into the air and fire shot out of the hole.

“I heard a real loud boom; I looked behind me and I saw flames before I saw the thing [manhole cover] coming back down,” said Josh Knapp, who was working for Records Systems of Boardman.

“That had to be a gas leak or something. It was loud. It’s the first time I’ve seen that,” he said, adding that it shocked him.

He and others pushed the cover back over the hole because the manhole is about 2 feet across and could have damaged someone’s car if the lid were not back on.

A secretary at the Warren Water Pollution Control Department said she was unaware of the 1 p.m. explosion but that workers would be checking into it.
