Fifteen students in the Canfield High School art department participated in the 2013-14 Northeastern Ohio Scholastic Art Exhibition, with one receiving an American Visions Gold Key (Best of Show), a Gold Key, nine Silver Keys and many Honorable Mentions.
Senior Haley Holt won the highest honor, the American Visions Gold Key, a Silver Key, Honorable Mention Portfolio and Honorable Mention; junior Bonnie Anderson won a Gold Key and a Silver Key and senior Marcella Sinclair won a Silver Key Portfolio and a Silver Key.
Silver Key winners included, Megan Factor, Jillian Lemmo, Theresa Mikolay, Nagmita Shrestha and Jarret Vrabel. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Lauren Adams, Alisha Boykin, Ashley Durr, Maddie Magyar, Jenny McClune and Elena Merhaut.
The winning works of art were on display at Bliss Hall Gallery on the campus of Youngstown State University through Jan. 30.
Students in grades nine through 12 from Mahoning, Trumbull, Ashtabula and Columbiana counties were eligible for the competition. Each art teacher from each high school was allowed to enter nine works of art, with the entries being chosen from the course of the year.
Kate Antal and Kevin Hoopes, Canfield High School art teachers, chose the works of art for the students.
“These students work hard. They want to learn. They are great, talented kids,” said Hoopes.
AP art course students Holt and Sinclair both plan to study art in college, with Holt attending Kent State University to major in Art Education and Sinclair attending Westminster College to major in Fine Arts.
“I have always been into art, but wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue it as a career. I would say I decided last year that I was serious about it and wanted to go into art education,” Holt said.
“I discovered my talent in ninth-grade. Art becomes more serious at the high school level and since then I knew I wanted to pursue art,” Sinclair said.
Anderson was surprised she won, but has always been interested in art.
“My parents have always seen the artistic talent in me and encouraged it. When I got to high school, I did get more serious about it. I enjoy drawing, painting and sewing. My dad is a wood worker and makes furniture from barn wood, so I think some of it comes from him.
“I am surprised I won. I am excited and it is an honor to be recognized. It is cool to be included with all these talented artists. I am going to challenge myself for next year and work really hard for next year, too,” Anderson said.
Pieces that won an American Vision Award or a Gold Key Award will move on to be judged nationally, with Carnegie Hall in New York City being the final stop for the pieces. National awards will be announced mid-April with an awards ceremony planned for summer.
The Canfield High School art department participates in several art shows throughout the year. The department will have a display at the Art Outreach Gallery Show at the Eastwood Mall in Niles from Feb. 7-23, with a reception to be offered from 2-5 p.m. on the 23rd.
“More than 50 2-D and 3-D pieces of art work will be on display at the gallery to showcase the students in the art program,” said Antal.
Several art students volunteered to paint a mural at Fellows Riverside Gardens’ Winter Celebration and will also paint “Alice in Wonderland” cut outs for Fellows Riverside Gardens.
The students are also preparing for the 2014 44th Annual Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition in Columbus. The department will also have students’ works of art on display at Old North Church in March. This display is open to the public during church operating hours.
To wrap up their school year, the Canfield High School art department will host its own art show from 6-9 p.m. May 21-22 in the high school gym. The department welcomes donations to help offset the cost of the show. Anyone interested in donating may contact Hoopes or Antal at the high school at 330-533-5507.
