The Hermitage Fire Department will conduct its monthly test of the area’s weather warning sirens at 10 a.m. today.

The test includes activation of the Clark, Pa., Farrell, Pa., Sharpsville, Pa., West Middlesex, Pa., and Wheatland, Pa., weather sirens.

Fire officials ask that residents disregard the sirens during the test.

Pedestrian killed

EDINBURG, PA.

A 62-year-old pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a westbound car on Benjamin Franklin Highway (U.S. Route 422) on Tuesday evening.

Edward Minteer of Benjamin Franklin Highway was taken from the crash scene to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the car, Ardell Biddle, 58, of Pulaski, Pa., told Mahoning Township Police he did not see Minteer, who was walking across the road toward his nearby residence at 6:56 p.m. Personnel with the Mahoning County coroner’s office will perform the autopsy, according to a township police report.

Parking deck open at Salem Regional

Salem Regional Medical Center’s new parking deck, which opened Tuesday, has 116 parking spaces and offers two separate levels of free parking for patients and visitors.

Opening of the parking deck, which can be accessed at the lower level from Pershing Street and at the upper level from East State Street, brings the number of parking spaces at the hospital to more than 1,000. The two levels are not connected. The upper level has 48 regular and six handicapped spaces and the lower level has 58 regular and four handicapped spaces.

Patients arriving for surgery and outpatient procedures are encouraged to enter the medical campus from Pershing Street and be dropped off at the Surgery Center entrance, with parking available in the deck or the outdoor outpatient lot.

Lily Pond reopened for ice skating

YOUNGSTOWN

Mill Creek Park’s Lily Pond reopened for ice skating Wednesday because of lower temperatures in recent days.

Supervised skating will continue there from 3 to 6 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Feb. 23, weather permitting.

The pond opened for ice skating last weekend, but park officials canceled skating there Sunday because of warmer weather.

Benches and a fire pit are being provided, but no skate rentals are available; participants must bring their own skates.

Trash-collection schedule normal

YOUNGSTOWN

Residential garbage collection in the city of Youngstown will not be affected by winter weather conditions. Ohio Valley Waste will follow its normal pickup schedule through Friday. City residents should place their garbage at the curb for their regularly scheduled collection day.
