YOUNGSTOWN
Niayana Records’ Second Sundays series will resume Sunday with the Phillip K. Jones Trio of Cleveland.
The series has moved to the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown, for the 2014 season. Tickets are $20 ($35 per couple).
Sunday’s event, which will start at 5 p.m. and end at 8 p.m., will honor the work of the Sojourner House, a shelter for the Valley. Food prepared by Guy’s BBQ will be sold, and Valley Vino will give a wine presentation.
An addition to the Second Sundays series will be the Jazz Appreciation Initiative, which targets high school musicians who are focusing on jazz as a career. Students will perform a selection of their own at each montly show.
On Sunday, saxophonist Brent Bigelow and selected students from South Range High School will be featured.
The JAI is under the direction of Alton Merrell of Youngstown State University. Its goal is to form a regional high school jazz ensemble, and parents and band directors who are interested in having their students participate should contact Jere B at jereb@niayana.com.
