Oakland’s Bader sets 3-pointer record

MILWAUKEE

Oakland’s Travis Bader set a NCAA Division I record for the most career 3-pointers on Sunday in the first half against Milwaukee, surpassing the previous mark of 457 set by Duke’s J.J. Redick.

Bader, who entered the game two behind Redick, missed his first 3-point attempt, but made his next four. He broke the record with a shot from the right corner with 6:17 left in the first half, pulling Oakland within 29-28.

He made his second attempt with 11:45 left in the half despite being fouled, converting the four-point play.

Bader, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, tied the record with a 3-pointer from the right wing with 6:58 left.

Bader finished the first half with 18 points, making of 5 of 7 3-pointers, giving him 460 for his career.

Murray wins at Petco Park

SAN DIEGO

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray beat Sam Querrey 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3 to clinch Britain’s opening-round Davis Cup victory against the United States at Petco Park.

Murray won his 18th straight Davis Cup singles match and Britain beat the Americans for the first time since 1935.

Britain advanced to the World Group quarterfinals for the first time since 1986. It will face Italy, which defeated Argentina.

Murray split tiebreakers with Querrey in the first two sets, breezed through the third set in 29 minutes and won the match when Querrey returned a serve long.

Britain clinched the match at 3-1. The fourth singles match was canceled.

Hurricanes recall goaltender Ward

RALEIGH, N.C.

The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled goalie Cam Ward from his brief conditioning stint in the minor leagues.

Ward went 1-1 with a 2.02 goals-against average in two games this weekend with the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate in Charlotte.

The 2006 Conn Smythe Trophy winner missed Carolina’s last 14 games with an unspecified lower-body injury and began his conditioning stint Friday.

He is 6-7-5 in 19 games with Carolina this season with a 3.15 GAA.

Record 88 nations to compete in Sochi

SOCHI, Russia

Athletes from 88 countries are set to compete in Sochi, a record for the Winter Olympics.

The IOC released the final list of national Olympic committees that will be participating in the Sochi Games, which open Friday.

The previous record was set at the 2010 Vancouver Games, where 82 national teams took part.

Among those competing in the Winter Games for the first time is the southern African nation of Zimbabwe, represented by Alpine skier Luke Steyn.

Togo and Morocco have also qualified.

Three athletes from India will be competing as “independent participants” under the Olympic flag. Their national Olympic committee remains suspended by the IOC pending election of new officials.

About 3,000 athletes will be competing in 98 medal events.
