Mathemagician Benjamin to speak on YSU campus

Arthur Benjamin, a mathemagician who has appeared on national television and been profiled in newspapers and magazines across the country, will give a free public lecture at 3:15 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.

The YSU Student Government Association, in conjunction with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, is sponsoring the lecture, which is open to the public.

Benjamin is a professor of mathematics and a magician.

His presentation is called “Mathemagics,” where he demonstrates and explains his secrets for performing rapid mental calculations faster than a calculator.

He has appeared on many television and radio programs, including “The Today Show,” CNN, “The Colbert Report” and National Public Radio.

He has been profiled in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Scientific American, Discover Magazine, Omni Magazine, Esquire Magazine, People Magazine, Wired and Reader’s Digest.

Benjamin’s presentation at the TED 2005 meeting received a standing ovation. Since the talk went online, it has been viewed more than 4 million times.
