YOUNGSTOWN
The Brier Hill Cultural Center will host a talk at 10 a.m. Saturday by educator and humanitarian Sister Jerome Corcoran, OSU, at the facility’s main hall, 145 Jefferson St.
The program, part of The Brier Hill Breakfast Series, will have Sister Jerome discussing her lifelong work as well as accepting a $10,000 check from the California-based Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.
Sister Jerome is responsible for establishing the Mill Creek Community Center and the Youngstown Community School.
For 36 years, she served as director of the Mill Creek Children’s Center preschool for children of lower-income working parents, and played a key role in the founding of a charter school next to the center. In 2012, she established Sister Jerome’s Poor, a nonprofit organization to assist working-poor families in emergencies. Last year, she raised $80,000 that benefited more than 50 families.
The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, established in 1944 by renowned hotelier and philanthropist Conrad N. Hilton, has awarded the $10,000 grant to Sister Jerome’s Kids, a program designed to help poor urban children enter a college or trade school.
In 1986, the trust founded the Conrad N. Hilton Fund for Sisters to specifically support the apostolic work of Roman Catholic nuns. The check will be presented by Nancy Dawson, the Ursuline Superior General Sister. The program is open to the public with an admission cost of $5, which will include refreshments. Secured parking is available at the cultural center.
