Maple Sugaring Day planned for Scouts

Staff report

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA.

The Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, will host a Maple Sugaring Day for Boy and Girl Scouts on March 22. Wednesday is the registration deadline.

Scouts age 7 to 11 will participate in a two-hour program that will explore how a tree works and demonstrate the art of maple sugaring from past to present. The program will begin indoors and move outside for a guided walk featuring a working evaporator and a taste of real maple syrup. It will be offered in the morning from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 3 p.m. Each participating Scout will receive an embroidered patch.

Cub Scout den leaders and Girl Scout troop leaders must pre-register their Scouts for either the morning or afternoon session by calling the Jennings Center at 724-794-1090 Wednesday between 8:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.; leaders also may pre-register in person during this time. The program cost is $2 per person, and space is limited. Scout leaders will need to confirm and pre-pay for an accurate number of registered participants by Feb. 28.

Jennings is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset for hiking and other environmentally related activities.
