Ohio inmate pleads guilty in deadly prison fight

LIMA, Ohio (AP) — An inmate at an Ohio prison has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter over a fight in a prison kitchen that left another inmate dead.

The fight happened last spring at the Allen Correctional Institution in Lima.

An attorney for inmate Victor Beard says the altercation started when another inmate was stealing butter from the prison kitchen. The inmate, 58-year-old Larry Bumphus, died a few weeks later.

Beard pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter Tuesday and had another year added to his sentence. The Lima News reports he was serving a 10-year sentence out of Lorain County on drug-trafficking convictions.

Bumphus was serving a 27-year sentence after being convicted of rape and aggravated burglary in Erie County.
