New Years Eve earthquake to be commemorated today

YOUNGSTOWN — Frackfree Mahoning Valley and supporters will have simultaneous commemorative events in Youngstown, Weathersfield, and Poland Township to remember the earthquake that took place on Dec. 31, 2011, which was induced by the Northstar 1 injection well.

The gatherings will occur at all three locations at 2:45 p.m. today. The Weathersfield gathering will be at 1749 N. Main Street in Niles. The Youngstown commemoration will take place in downtown at the intersection of Market Street and West Federal Street on the public sidewalk. The Poland Township gathering will occur near the Poland Township Park on Moore Road in Lowellville.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources closed the Northstar 1 well near the epicenter of the earthquake off of Ohio Works Drive in Youngstown after the 4.0-magnitude Dec. 31, 2011 earthquake and many smaller quakes earlier that year.
