The first ever thoroughbred racing season at Mahoning Valley Race Course ended on a high note Tuesday with its first ever million dollar handle. The closing day handle of $1,102,566 pushed the total all-sources handle for the 21-day season to $12,909,041.91, a daily average of $614,716.28. Of that, $688,600 was bet on-track, an average of more than $32,695.00 per day. The meet, which offered eight races a day, featured a total of 1,447 horses that competed in the 168 races, an average of more than 8.6 horses per race.
The 2015 Winter/Spring racing season kicks off Monday, Jan. 5, and will run through Saturday, April 25. The season will feature a four-day-a-week schedule, Monday-Wednesday, & Saturday, with a first post of 12:45 p.m.
Stanley captures riding title at MVRC

Angel O. Stanley, a 41-year-old Bronx, NY native held off a riding colony to become the leading rider at the inaugural meet at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course.
Always at or near the lead after a quick start, Stanley won a total of 24 races from 112 mounts, a solid 21 percent winning percentage and his mounts earned more than $163,766 in purse money during the 21-day meet.
Four Phantoms tabbed for top prospects game
Youngstown
Kyle Connor, Chase Pearson, Kris Myllari and Chris Birdsall have been selected to participate in the 2015 USHL/NHL top prospects game in Dubuque, Iowa. Connor is second on the Phantoms with 27 points. Pearson has 13 points in 26 games, Myllari has four points as a defensemen and Birdsall is 6-2-5 with a 2.74 goals-against average this season.
Scott to play in Semper Fidelis game

Hubbard’s Larry Scott has been selected to play in the 4th annual Semper Fidelis on Sunday in Los Angeles. The Michigan State commit will play along side many other top players in the country, including Mr. Ohio winner Joe Burow. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Lions’ Suh has 1-game suspension reduced
NEW YORK
Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh can play in Detroit’s playoff game after his one-game NFL suspension was reduced to a $70,000 fine. Hearing officer Ted Cottrell heard Suh’s expedited appeal Tuesday and ruled that Suh can play Sunday at Dallas but must pay the fine.
Suh originally was suspended for stepping on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ left leg twice last Sunday in a loss to Green Bay for the NFC North title. He stepped on Rodgers once with each foot, which violated unnecessary roughness rules, according to the league. But Cottrell reduced the punishment.
Parenteau’s SO goal lifts Canadiens
SUNRISE, Fla.
Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau scored the winning shootout goal to lift the Montreal Canadiens over the Florida Panthers 2-1. Parenteau’s shot glanced off the glove of Roberto Luongo and went into the net in the third round of the shootout. Jonathan Huberdeau missed on the ensuing attempt, and Montreal improved to 5-1 in shootouts.
The Canadiens have won four in a row — including three on the road — and seven of eight. Brendan Gallagher scored in regulation for Montreal, and Dustin Tokarski had 36 saves in his first start in 11 games.
Weber’s 2 goals lead Predators over Blues
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
Shea Weber scored twice to lead the Nashville Predators to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues.
Gabriel Bourque added a goal for Nashville, which has won two of three.
Chris Butler and T.J. Oshie scored for St. Louis, but the Blues lost for the fifth time in six games despite the return of No. 1 goalie Brian Elliott.
