Aaron Young will make $5,000 more per year than his predecessor as he takes over as executive director of Mill Creek MetroParks.

His five-year contract, worth $92,500 a year, is from Jan. 1, 2015, to Dec. 31, 2019, and was unanimously approved Tuesday night by the Mill Creek MetroParks Board of Commissioners. He will have five weeks of vacation, two fewer than his predecessor, Dennis Miller.

Board President Lou Schiavoni explained that the difference in vacation time is because Miller had been with the parks for 17 years versus Young, who came from the Geauga Park District.

“We had some really good candidates and wanted to be competitive,” Schiavoni said of the salary increase. “We thought by being a little more competitive, he’ll be on board for a long time.”

“I’m anxious to get started, meet the staff. I haven’t had the opportunity to meet all the staff,” Young said. “I think our goal is to continue what was started so long ago and to help further illustrate to the taxpayers of Mahoning County that their investment was a wise one, with regards to their support of the parks.”

Miller’s five-year contract, worth $87,500 a year, was to run from March 10, 2014, to March 9, 2019, and he had been executive director without a contract since Sept. 28, 2012, his contract detailed. He announced his resignation, effective at the end of 2014, in September. He is now going to be the golf director at The Lake Club, a country club in Poland.

Tuesday also marked the last meeting for board member Jay Macejko, as his term expired. “I will be around, and I certainly look forward to helping our executive director in any way I can. Thank you all,” he said.
