The Salvation Army Mahoning County Area Services expects to meet or exceed the $345,000 goal for its 2014 Red Kettle Campaign.

To date, with the support of local churches, businesses, private donors, civic organizations, local schools, athletic teams, art clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, youth groups, volunteer organizations and individuals, the kettle campaign has raised $320,371, said Maj. Elijah O. Kahn, coordinator of Salvation Army Mahoning County Area Services.

An additional $15,000 is expected in designated kettle sponsorship commitments that have not yet been received.

Also, based on preliminary numbers, Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC’s “Operation Santa Claus” will generate $10,000, bringing the kettle campaign total to $345,371, Kahn said.

The campaign is the largest fundraiser undertaken by the organization each year.

Kettle donations sustain the programs and services provided by the organization during the holidays and all year, Kahn said.

All funds contributed locally stay in Mahoning County and are used to provide Christmas assistance and year-round essential services to the needy.

“Without the generosity and support of the community and our donors, this would not be possible” Kahn added. “We are blessed to be part of a community that cares for its neediest and most vulnerable citizens.”
