Ohio town to celebrate 2015 with annual walleye drop

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (AP) — New Year’s Eve along Lake Erie in northern Ohio means just one thing: the annual walleye drop in Port Clinton.

The quirky event that first began in 1996 has become a tradition in the city east of Toledo.

Organizers lower the 600-pound walleye made of wood and fiberglass to welcome the new year.

Two years ago, the walleye drop got air time on CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman.”

The party has grown over the years.

The News-Herald in Port Clinton reports that there’s even a minnow drop for the youngsters who can’t make it up until the official walleye drop at midnight.
