Cancer seminar

Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley, N.E.O. Urology Associates, and Partners for Urology Health are offering a seminar, “Prostate Cancer & You,” at 5 p.m. Jan. 20 at Partners for Urology Health, 6262 Mahoning Ave., Austintown.

Daniel J. Ricchiuti, M.D., of N.E.O. Urology, will discuss prostate-cancer risk factors, who should be screened, detection and treatment. He will also answer questions.

The lecture is free and open to anyone interested in learning about prostate cancer and age-appropriate prostate-cancer screening. For most men, Dr. Ricchiuti recommends prostate cancer screenings begin at 40, and earlier if they have a family history of prostate cancer.

The Urology Care Foundation says 1 in 7 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives; and more than 233,000 will be diagnosed this year, 29,480 of whom will die.

Blood screenings

COLUMBIANA

Salem Regional Medical Center’s Outreach Services and Laboratory is offering comprehensive blood screenings Jan. 17. Screenings are available by appointment only at the Columbiana Family Care Center, 750 E. Park Ave., Columbiana. The fee is $40.

Comprehensive blood screenings can help identify many health problems in their earliest stages, when they are most treatable, hospital officials said.

Participants may add a prostate specific antigen (PSA) screening to their comprehensive panel for an additional $10, and a HgA1C diabetes screening for an additional $25. A lipid profile, which measures cholesterol levels and is included in the comprehensive screening, is also available alone for $10.

Kids’ group gets gift

Employees of the Poland-based Pharmacy Data Management, Inc., a provider of pharmacy benefit solutions, recently donated $2,200 to Making Kids Count.

This is the eighth year that employees have raised money for a charity during the December holidays to help children in difficult situations who are often overlooked or have serious medical needs, said Karen Cessna, director of sales and marketing.

Making Kids Count is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making children feel special by providing items such as Comfort Kits with necessities for children entering the foster care system and the Hope Totes Program, which sends personalized bags to children undergoing chemotherapy at Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley.
