Polar Bear Bike Ride on New Year’s Day

HERMITAGE, PA.

The Shenango Valley YMCA’s 13th annual Polar Bear Bike Ride will be New Year’s Day.

Riders can participate in one of three routes, with distances of 11, 21 and 30 miles. All routes begin at the YMCA, 925 N. Hermitage Road, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

The routes are over lightly traveled country roads with no rest stops along the way.

A sag wagon will sweep the course to provide aid to those in need.

The past few years, the temperature on New Year’s Day has been around 30 degrees with an inch of new snow.

But even with these conditions, there has been a solid group of new and experienced riders.

A lunch will follow after the ride at the YMCA. Riders who register early will receive discounts on registration and shirts. Riders can also register the day of the event between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.
