Men’s garden club bestows awards

YOUNGSTOWN

On Dec. 10 the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown had its annual Christmas dinner and awards ceremony.

Award recipients follow:

Certificate of Appreciation: Theodore J. Barritt, greenhouse spring and fall, plant sale.

Certificate of Honor: Bob Fink, Canfield Fair booth assembly and the Winter Seminar; Dave Williams, water mums many years; and Charlie Grounds, chief chef and soil technician for greenhouse.

Communication Award: Richard States. Recently won best of show in the 2014 Gardeners of America/Men’s Garden clubs of America photography competition for his image of the trillium grandiflorum, the official wildflower of Ohio. He also gives presentations for club meetings.

President Award: Dennis Zap, 2013 and 2014

Horticulture Award: Larry Tooker, residential horticulture specialist who has provided many excellent speakers.

Heritage Award: Bill Slabe, past president, membership chairman and greenhouse worker. He supports greenhouse sales, planted at the downtown memorial, is a certified judge and has been on the Horticulture Show Classification Committee for several years.

Master Gardener Award: John Kolar, who is recently deceased. Secretary for many years, key member of the Greenhouse Committee. In addition to working in the greenhouse he took care of the gardens outside the greenhouse and was a clerk for the annual horticulture show and registration chairman for the Winter Seminar.
