Kwanzaa event set for Sunday

YOUNGSTOWN

Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., will present the Kwanzaa principle ujima during a free program at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Ujima means to build and maintain the community and help fellow residents solve problems.

The church also will honor its late founder, the Rev. Timothy Duvall, who died in 1940.

First Friday Club plans speaker

Bishop George V. Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown will speak when the First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown meets Jan. 8 at Antone’s Banquet Centre on Market Street.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. Cost is $16.

Watch Night services planned

YOUNGSTOWN

The origin of the Watch Night service revolves around Dec. 31, 1862, when black community members gathered at churches and homes to wait for the news that the Emancipation Proclamation had become law Jan. 1, 1863.

The document freed slaves in the Confederate States of America. And it led to the enactment of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, which proclaim that African-Americans and other minorities cannot be discriminated upon due to race.

A New Year’s Eve Watch Night service is planned at 10 p.m. Wednesday. at Christian Bible Baptist Church, 2369 Oak Street Ext., with Pastor Keith A. Neal.

Union Baptist Church, 528 Lincoln Ave., will conduct a Watch Night service at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Holiday celebration

YOUNGSTOWN

Greater Friendship Baptist Church, 646 Lakewood Ave., will host a New Year’s Eve celebration at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday with praise, worship, song and prayer.
