After bringing back its Night Owl story time in September for the first time in 10 years, the Boardman library hosted its second event on Nov. 18.

“Tuesday morning story times for preschoolers aren’t drawing anybody, so we decided to try a night time story time so we’ll have it today, then we’ll start it weekly in January,” children’s librarian John Yingling said.

There won’t be a Night Owl story time in December, but it will return every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in January.

“A lot of preschools are in session on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or Tuesday and Thursday, and the kids at that age were already in preschool,” Yingling said. “A lot of parents were expressing interest that if we would do something at night they’d be able to attend, so we’ll give it a try.”

The story time on Nov. 18 attracted 15 adults and children for the 30-minute program geared toward children ages 3-5.

For the Thanksgiving-themed story time, Yingling read the books “Squirrel’s Turkey Surprise,” “Clifford’s Thanksgiving Visit” and “The Best Thanksgiving Ever!”

Afterward, there was a craft during which the children made turkeys with markers, glue and real feathers.

Yingling said he hopes coming to the Night Owl story time instills a love of reading in the children.

“I hope they get a love of reading and books and being with other children if they haven’t been in preschool before,” he said.
