BOARDMAN

Retirement is the last thing on Joyce Masko’s mind.

The 75-year-old aesthetician, or licensed skin-care specialist, has provided an intimate setting for skin-care services for nearly 40 years at her clinic, Facial Care by Joyce.

“I like the challenge of problem skin,” she said.

The clinic, which is connected to her home at 7026 Trenholm Road, offers a private room for manicures and pedicures, skin treatment and waxing .

“I personalized everyone’s skin-care treatment,” she said.

Angel ornaments are seen throughout the clinic, which represent Masko’s spiritual connection to her work. “This is my temple,” she said.

Most of Masko’s business over the years has come from client referrals. She said with her business located at her home, her hours are flexible and can accommodate her clients’ schedules. Some of her clients come from as far as New York City for her services, she said.

Kathy Fox is the only staff member that works for Joyce as a manicurist and pedicurist. Fox said the success of Masko’s business comes down to her experience and client base.

“She’s perfected her technique and connected with her clientele,” she said.

Masko attended beauty school in the 1950s, but soon after started her research about skin care and the practices involved with it.

“I was like a pioneer,” she said. “I wanted to do something that no one else is doing.”

She started out working in other beauty salons before going out on her own 38 years ago, where she went through four facilities in the Boardman area. Among her clients included Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, the renowned Youngstown-native boxer, during his early career.

Eventually, Masko and her second husband, who died three years ago, built the skin-care clinic attached to their home more than two decades ago.

Masko said she uses the products on herself that she supplies to her customers.

“I practice what I preach,” she said.
