Merry Christmas: Youngstown receives gift of more than 10 acres along Mahoning River

YOUNGSTOWN — On Christmas Eve, the city received a gift of 10.4 acres of former industrial land along the Mahoning River.

The site is that of the 500,000-square-foot former Wean United building, which was demolished this year.

The city’s board of control this morning accepted the donation from Gearmar Properties of Portersville, Pa., which demolished the building and sold material from it for scrap.

The downtown land, located west of the Market Street bridge, is at the dead end of South Phelps Street.

City officials want to market the property for potential new economic development, but have also considered using the acreage as a riverfront park or to provide additional parking for the nearby city-owned Covelli Centre.
