Ohio sheriff: Girl dead, mom shot in domestic dispute

NEW PARIS, Ohio (AP) — A man recently charged with domestic violence shot a 10-year-old girl and her mother as they ran from a home, then killed himself after the confrontation that left the child dead, a southwest Ohio sheriff said today.

Deputies responding to multiple 911 calls late Monday night found all three with gunshot wounds in the driveway of a home in New Paris, near the Indiana state line. One of the calls came from the woman, who told a dispatcher that she and her daughter had been shot and the shooter turned the gun on himself, Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson said.

Simpson said it appeared the man forced his way into the home, and the woman and the girl fled through a back door as the man chased them with a handgun.

The man and child died at the scene. The 45-year-old woman was taken to an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The shooter, 43-year-old Brian Harleman, recently lived with the woman and the couple had a history of domestic violence, Simpson said.

Deputies were called to the home last Wednesday, and Harleman was charged with domestic violence, Simpson said in a statement that did not include details of that complaint. The county court issued a protection order against Harleman, who was released from jail the following day after posting bond, Simpson said.

Authorities were withholding the names of the woman and child while their family was being notified.

Autopsies for the man and the girl were expected later today in Montgomery County.
