Rambo does not live up to his name.

At least that’s what Mahoning County Dog Pound Kennel Manager Rick Punison says about the pit bull, who was brought in Monday with an arrow sticking out of his head.

Although the dog was named after the rampaging veteran of several action films, Punison said the dog is actually very sweet and even-tempered.

“He was licking everybody when the deputy brought him in,” Punison said.

The dog was found on the East Side at Miami and Scioto avenues about noon Monday. Police and members of the dog warden’s office searched for the dog after receiving a report that he was running around with an arrow sticking out of his head.

Punison said a veterinarian is planning to operate on the dog but it is not known how much the damage the arrow has done. He said the dog appears to be well taken care of. Rambo is male and is about 3 or 4 years old, Punison said.

Punison said the dog looks to be well-fed and his nails have been cared for as well.

“He is the ideal weight for his size,” Punison said.

Rambo also is well-behaved. Punison had to cut the arrow where it was sticking out so he could turn his head, and Rambo made no protest at all.

“He didn’t flinch at all,” Punison said.

Punison said the arrow appears to have been recently shot into the dog. He said the blood is fresh and there are no signs of clotting.

Through donations, Friends of Fido will be paying for the operation to remove the arrow.

Anyone who has information on who may have fired the arrow can call the dog pound at 330-740-2205, option 1, Punison said. If the person who fired the arrow is found, he or she could be charged with animal cruelty.
