Quarterback injuries may force Browns to start Shaw

CLEVELAND (AP) — Brian Hoyer hurt his shoulder filling in for injured rookie Johnny Manziel on Sunday, complicating the Browns’ messy quarterback situation.

Coach Mike Pettine said Hoyer got injured when he was hit making a long throw against Carolina. Hoyer came in after Manziel, making his second start, injured his hamstring.

Manziel has been ruled out of Sunday’s season finale in Baltimore. If Hoyer can’t play, rookie Connor Shaw will start. Shaw, an undrafted free agent from South Carolina, has spent this season on the practice squad.

Hoyer started Cleveland’s first 13 games and had the Browns in the playoff hunt before a slump forced Pettine to switch to Manziel. Hoyer connected with tight end Jordan Cameron on an 81-yard touchdown pass against the Panthers.

Manziel went 3 of 8 for 32 yards before he had to come out.
