Irving earns USA Basketball award

NEW YORK

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, the MVP of the Basketball World Cup, was honored Sunday as the USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year.

Irving started in all nine games for the Americans in Spain and averaged 12.1 points and 3.6 assists. He scored 26 points in the gold-medal game, going 6 of 6 from 3-point range to spark a rout of Serbia.

Irving was selected by USA Basketball’s board of directors.

Former Clemson QB Chad Kelly arrested

BUFFALO, N.Y.

The Buffalo News reports former Clemson quarterback Chad Kelly was arrested over the weekend after an altercation at a downtown Buffalo restaurant.

The newspaper says Kelly was arrested early Sunday after allegedly punching a bouncer for refusing to leave the establishment. A police report says the 20-year-old Kelly then allegedly scuffled with officers while being removed from a pickup which police stopped nearby.

Kelly faces numerous charges, including resisting arrest, third-degree assault, second-degree harassment and second-degree menacing. He was arraigned in Buffalo City Court and released without bail.

Kelly is the nephew of Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.

In April, Kelly was kicked off the Clemson football team for conduct detrimental to the program.

This past season, he led East Mississippi Community College to the National Junior College Athletic Association title.

Last week, Kelly announced he made a verbal commitment to play at Mississippi.

India’s Arjun Atwal wins Dubai Open

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates

India’s Arjun Atwal won the Asian Tour’s season-ending Dubai Open on Sunday, rallying on the final hole to beat 19-year-old South Korean player Wang Jeung-hun by a stroke.

A shot behind entering the par-5 18th, Atwal closed with a birdie and Wang made a bogey.

The 41-year-old Atwal won for the first time since the PGA Tour’s 2010 Wyndham Championship. He finished with a 6-under 66 for a 16-under 272 total at The Els Club Dubai.

Wang had a 67.

Scotland’s Simon Yates was third at 13 under after a 68.

Brazil draws with US to win home tourney

BRASILIA, Brazil

Brazil’s women’s soccer team drew 0-0 with the United States on Sunday to win the International Tournament of Brasilia.

Brazil had the tiebreaker in the final because it finished with the best result in group play at the four-team competition in the nation’s capital.

The hosts controlled possession during most of the match but it was the U.S. that came close to scoring the winner just before the final whistle. Defender Becky Sauerbrunn headed the ball toward the net but it struck the crossbar after being tipped by Brazilian goalkeeper Luciana.

The Americans also had a late goal disallowed for offside. Brazil appealed for a penalty earlier in the second half.

China finished third after a 0-0 draw against Argentina in the first game of the day at the Mane Garrincha Stadium.

Ronaldo unveils statue of himself in Portugal

LISBON, Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has unveiled a statue of himself on his home island of Madeira in Portugal.

Ronaldo calls the larger-than-life bronze statue “prettier than me,” according to Spanish news agency Europa Press.

The 29-year-old Real Madrid forward helped the Spanish team win the Club World Cup in Morocco on Saturday.

Ronaldo already has a museum dedicated to his career on Madeira.

He says “I never expected to have a statue in my life.”
