Crash injures man

CHAMPION

A Champion Township man remains in serious condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after crossing the center lane and hitting another car head-on at 9:55 p.m. Thursday on Mahoning Avenue Northwest.

James R. Meyer Jr., 43, of Durst Drive was southbound on Mahoning with no headlights on when he crossed into the northbound lanes, striking a car driven by Chris H. Rilling Jr., 38, of Towson Drive in Champion, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Meyer’s seat belt was not in use in his 2010 Honda Accord, and he was partially ejected from his car. He was taken initially to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital but later transferred to St. Elizabeth.

Rilling, who was wearing a seat belt in his 2012 Jeep Wrangler, suffered minor injuries.

Trial to go on

WARREN

Jeff Irby, accused of firing between three and seven gunshots at Hubbard police Oct. 14, told Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on Friday he will not allow his trial to be moved back, making it likely he will go to trial as planned Jan. 5.

Irby’s attorney, David Rouzzo with the Ohio Public Defender’s Office, had sought to push the trial back to obtain an expert witness to analyze the state’s DNA and gun-residue evidence, but Irby refused.

Police say Irby, 26, of Youngstown and Fort Wayne, Ind., fled on foot from a traffic stop at 11:30 a.m., then fired a gun toward an officer pursuing him, but the shots missed.

Drug charges

BOARDMAN

A township man faces drug-trafficking charges after a raid at his apartment earlier this month led to his arrest Thursday.

Police arrested Jamie McCutcheon, 21, on a warrant after the department’s narcotics enforcement unit searched his apartment on the 7300 block of Bonnie Place on Dec. 11 and found suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Anthony Cruz, 23, of Terrace Drive, who was in McCutcheon’s apartment, was arrested on Dec. 11.

McCutcheon was taken to the Mahoning County jail. He is free on bond, pending an appearance in Mahoning County Area Court on Tuesday.
