Trial of accused shooter likely in January

WARREN

Jeff Irby, accused of firing between three and seven gunshots at Hubbard police Oct. 14, told Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court this morning he will not allow his trial to be moved back, making it likely he will go to trial as planned Jan. 5.

Irby’s attorney, David Rouzzo with the Ohio Public Defender’s Office, had sought to push the trial back to obtain an expert witness to analyze the state’s DNA and gun-residue evidence, but Irby refused.

Police say Irby, 26, of Youngstown and Fort Wayne, Ind., fled on foot from a traffic stop at 11:30 a.m., then fired a gun toward an officer pursuing him, but the shots missed.
