YOUNGSTOWN

A waste-management company is relocating its corporate offices from Middlefield to downtown Youngstown’s 20 Federal Place.

The board of control approved a five-year lease Thursday with North American Waste Solutions that starts Jan. 1.

The company initially will have five to six employees at the city-owned 20 Federal Place on West Federal Street, and plans to bring more workers there in the future, said Sean T. McKinnney, the city’s buildings and grounds superintendent.

Middlefield is in Geauga County, about 40 miles from Youngstown.

Attempts to reach company officials Thursday by The Vindicator were unsuccessful.

The company’s website says North American Waste Solutions helps customers “find better ways to manage their waste. As a national company, we provide comprehensive waste removal solutions for companies that do not have the time or resources to manage it on their own. NAWS offers fast delivery and pick up of dumpsters, roll-off containers and bins. We have temporary dumpsters we can place at your locations for one time use, or offer permanent solutions for your waste, disposal and recycling needs with regular pickups.”

The company will lease 1,200 square feet of space on the second floor of 20 Federal Place.

The annual rent for 2015 is $5.50 a square foot, and increases by 50 cents a year topping out at $7.50 in the fifth year. There’s also a $2-a-square-foot “common-area” fee, a charge of $1.20 per square foot for electricity, and $840 a year for two parking spaces. The company will pay $11,280 a year to the city to start, increasing to $13,680 annually in the fifth year of the deal.

“They want to attract more business in the Youngstown area,” McKinney said about the company’s reason to relocate to the city.
