Celtics trade all-star PG Rondo to Mavericks

BOSTON

A person with knowledge of the deal says the Boston Celtics have agreed to trade four-time all-star point guard Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks.

The Celtics will get Jae Crowder, Brandan Wright, Jameer Nelson and two draft picks, said the person who spoke on the condition of anonymity Thursday night because the trade was not official yet.

The deal gives Dallas a pass-first point guard and gives Dirk Nowitzki a chance at another title. The Mavericks also get forward Dwight Powell in the deal while giving up a first-round pick in 2015 and a second-rounder the next season.

Rondo, 28, joined the rebuilding Celtics as the 21st overall pick out of Kentucky and became the point guard for an NBA champion when Boston acquired Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett the next summer. He helped the Celtics reach the NBA finals again two years later.

Helfrich: Ekpre-Olomu won’t play against FSU

EUGENE, Ore.

Oregon coach Mark Helfrich confirmed Thursday that the third-ranked Ducks will be without star cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu when they face Jameis Winston and Florida State in their playoff game next month.

Helfrich acknowledged the senior All-America’s college career is over after he was injured during a noncontact drill on Tuesday. The coach wouldn’t disclose the nature of the injury.

But a person with knowledge of the injury had previously told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Ekpre-Olomu had hurt his right knee. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the program does not discuss injuries. Ekpre-Olomu has been a cornerstone of the Ducks’ secondary with 63 tackles, two interceptions and six pass breakups this season.

49ers’ Harbaugh mum on reported offer

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is declining to respond to reports that he is weighing an offer from Michigan to become the new football coach at his alma mater.

Harbaugh has one season remaining on the $25 million, five-year contract he signed in January 2011. Several media outlets, including ESPN and the NFL Network, have reported Harbaugh has a six-year offer on the table from the Wolverines.

San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke said this week that a decision on Harbaugh’s future would come after the season. The Niners (7-7) were eliminated from playoff contention in last Sunday’s 17-7 loss at Seattle, giving them their first three-game losing streak under Harbaugh. San Francisco had reached three straight NFC championship games.

Judge delays January trial on PSU sanctions

HARRISBURG, Pa.

A judge is delaying a trial on the legality of the NCAA’s consent decree that punished Penn State for its handling of sex abuse complaints about former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Commonwealth Court Judge Anne Covey on Thursday said the case brought by Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman and state Treasurer Rob McCord will begin Feb. 17. It had been scheduled for Jan. 6.

The judge says she needs more time to resolve disagreements about which documents the NCAA must produce. She’s also requiring the NCAA to give her the documents under seal so she can determine if Corman and McCord should get them.

Corman and McCord sued to enforce a state law requiring the consent decree’s $60 million fine benefit Pennsylvania only.
