CHS swimmers start season in top spots
The Canfield High School swimming team recently began its season with a meet at Youngstown State University on Dec. 7 against Warren G. Harding, Wooster and Boardman.
The girls team came in second overall with a score of 117.
Sarah Heaven claimed a first place finish in the 100 backstroke, as well as second place finishes in the 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley and 400 free relay. Rachel Williams saw first in the 500 freestyle event and second in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. Theresa Mikolay had two second place finishes in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay events, as well as a third place finish in the 100 breaststrike. Maggie Beistel claimed second place in both the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay events, while Carlie Oddo took second in diving.
The Canfield boys swimmers took first overall with a score of 157.
Connor Brady took top marks with three first place finishes in the 100 butterfly, 400 free relay and 100 backstroke events, as well as a third place finish in the 200 free relay. Kyle Anderson placed first in the 500 freestyle and 400 free relay, as well as taking second in the 200 individual medley. Matthew Bogen was first in the 400 free relay and 100 breaststroke, and third in the 500 freestyle. Alec Gaetano took third in both the 100 butterfly and 200 free relay events. Ben Brucoli saw first in the 400 free relay, while Luke Bennett and Kamran Sarac both saw third in the free relay.
The CHS swimming team took on Hubbard at YSU on Dec. 9.
The girls team defeated Hubbard with scores of 128-41. First place finishers for the team included Sarah Heaven (200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 200 free relay, 100 breaststroke), Theresa Mikolay (200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 free relay), Maggie Beistel (200 medley relay, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 400 free relay), Rachel Williams (200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 400 free relay), Morgan Weiss (200 and 400 free relay events), Marissa Marzano (200 and 400 free relay events) and Carlie Oddo (diving).
The boys team defeated Hubbard with scores of 108-48. First place finishes for Canfield included Connor Brady (200 medley relay, 500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 400 free relay), Alec Gaetano (200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke, 400 free relay), Matthew Bogen (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 free relay, 400 free relay), Kyle Anderson (200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 200 free relay), Ben Brucoli (200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 200 free relay), Kamran Sarac (200 free relay) and Cullen Brady (400 free relay).
