Boardman Park gave area boys a chance to play superhero with its third annual Mom and Son Date Knight on Nov. 14-15.

The first evening of the event sold out with 49 couples, and the second was just two couples shy of selling out as well.

“This event came about because so many in the community asked for an event for moms and sons,” Boardman Park recreation director Karen McCallum said. “I was able to accommodate fathers and daughters, our annual father-daughter dance and our mommy and me for tea. I had so many moms asking me for something for moms and sons. After many attempts and fails, the Mom and Son Date Knight has come and has come with a vengeance.

“It’s a great opportunity for moms to show their heroes that little guys mean a lot to them.”

There were many activities for the moms and sons to enjoy. The boys could make their own shield, color masks, learn mind reading tricks and archery. There was a scavenger hunt and the chance to meet Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hawkeye and Black Widow.

The boys could also make a craft for their moms that said “My Mom Rocks” on it and pose for pictures with their moms. There was a dinner consisting of chicken a la king, chicken nuggets and mashed potatoes.

“Lots of fun games and activities throughout the evening,” McCallum said. “This year is all about being the hero. We have a SHIELD academy training night for the boys and the moms have secret missions that they are to help and assist their young avengers become heroes.

“It’s a great opportunity for the moms to do something with their child from ages 4-8. The boys get to dress up like their favorite characters as well as they’ll get an opportunity to meet some of their favorite characters as well.”
