toy distribution today

The Mahoning County Salvation Army is gearing up to bring relief and Christmas cheer to those in need through its 2014 toy distribution and food vouchers this week.

About 3,000 pre-registered needy children will receive Christmas toys and clothes, and about 1,500 needy families, men, women and the elderly will receive Christmas food vouchers for Christmas, which can be used at selected grocery stores.

The Salvation Army Christmas distribution will take place at a warehouse at 6000 Mahoning Ave., Unit 500, Austintown Plaza, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for regular appointments along with makeup and late-registered appointments.

“It is our prayer the gifts and food vouchers will help bring relief to brighten the lives of those in need during this wonderful season of peace and joy,” said Maj. Valerie Kahn, associate Mahoning County area coordinator.

The Mahoning County Salvation Army is in need of frozen turkeys for its annual Christmas Community Dinner served to hundreds of needy county residents from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. next Tuesday at 1501 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown.

Turkeys should be delivered to the Salvation Army by Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 1501 Glenwood Ave.

People and organizations who want to donate money for the dinner can drop it off at the same address between the same hours or mail a check or money order made out to the Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown, OH 44511.

Boardman Park is taking reservations for 2015 for use of its facilities.

Reservations for 2016 also will be open for availability online beginning Jan. 1 on the park website, www.boardmanpark.com, or Jan. 2 through the park office by calling 330-726-8105 or visiting the office at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

fair prep to start

The Canfield Fair annual exhibitors’ meeting will take place at 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at the fairgrounds. Exhibitors interested in various categories for the upcoming year are encouraged to attend. The arts and crafts department will meet in the administration building (No. 20), the horse and pony exhibitors will meet in the commercial building (No. 22), the antique-equipment exhibitors will meet in the maintenance building (No. 18) and all other departments will meet in the Colonial Inn (No. 19).
