YOUNGSTOWN

A 36-year-old South Side man was gunned down during a robbery at his home, police said.

Leroy Williams III died of multiple gunshot wounds at his 72 Brooklyn Ave. home, said police Lt. Douglas Bobovnyik. The shooting occurred at 2:45 a.m. Saturday.

He resided there with his girlfriend and four children, two of whom they had together, Bobovnyik said.

The children were upstairs and didn’t wake up when two intruders gained entry into the house and started shooting, Bobovnyik said.

“The exact circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation,” he said. Williams “was awake and was confronted by the two individuals when they started shooting.”

It isn’t clear if the intruders took anything, Bobovnyik said.

Williams moved to Youngs-town a few years ago from Mansfield.

Police are looking for suspects and following leads, but hadn’t made any arrests as of late Sunday.

This is the 18th homicide in the city so far this year. At this point last year, there were 17 slayings in Youngstown. Overall, there were 20 homicides in Youngstown last year.
